  Walking
There are many popular walks passing through Shincliffe village.  One of the most popular is the Durham City and Houghall Discovery Trail which follows the route of the River Wear from Shincliffe through mainly open country into Durham city centre and then back along the other side of the river.  Ask at reception for more information.

  Durham Botanic Garden  (2 miles)

5,000 acres of Forestry Commission woodland with marked walks, cycle routes, picnic areas, and a forest drive.  There is a visitor centre/forest shop, tea room, and cycle hire in the forest.

Metro Centre

If the weather is not so good why not spend the day visiting one of Europe's largest indoor shopping centres.  As well as hosting all of the usual high street names it also has themed shopping areas, a cinema, a bowling alley, and even an indoor theme park with roller coaster!

The Bowes Museum Bowes Museum (25 miles)
Magnificent French-style château set in 21 acres (8.5ha) of parkland with parterre garden. Opened in 1892, this purpose built museum contains one of the country's greatest private collections of fine and decorative art and runs an exciting programme of major exhibitions throughout the year.

Killhope's giant water wheel Killhope Lead Mine Museum (40 miles)
Museum commemorating the lead mine industry of Weardale. Restoration of the mine started in 1980 and continues today.
